アメリカで育った。19歳、1999年に日本へ帰ってきた。目標も特になく、とにかくラップすることだけが生き甲斐だった。行く先々でフリースタイルして称賛されるのが気持ちよかった。自己価値を感じられる唯一の方法だった。
I grew up in the States. I came back to Japan in 1999, at nineteen. No particular goal — rapping was the only thing that made life worth living. Freestyling wherever I went and being praised for it felt good. It was the only way I could feel my own worth.
帰国してからは、R&Bを軸にした日本語の歌を聴き込んだ。二つの言語のあいだで育った人間として、日本語と英語のどちらにも足を置いたまま仕事をするようになった。声のこと、言葉のこと、そのあいだで起きることが、そのまま仕事になっていった。
Back here, I dug into Japanese R&B and the way the language sits on a beat. Raised between two languages, I ended up working with a foot in both. Voice, words, and what happens in between — that became the work itself.
派手なドロップやわかりやすい盛り上がりよりも、そうではない少しの揺れや温度差に惹かれる。曖昧さや混ざり合いのなかにこそ、一番面白い瞬間があると思っている。
I’m drawn less to the big drop or the obvious peak than to the slight sway, the difference in temperature. The most interesting moment tends to sit in the ambiguity, in the blend.
